Volunteer Dog Walking at CARE Humane Society

Volunteer dog walking programs play a vital role in enhancing the well-being of shelter

dogs. Our staff at CARE works tirelessly to ensure that every dog has ample outside time each

day. However, with so many large dogs, this task would be a difficult one if it were not for the

help from our wonderful volunteer dog walkers. Because of our hardworking staff and volunteer

dog walkers, our dogs are given much-needed opportunities for outdoor exercise, exploration,

and playtime. Daily walks not only help dogs burn off excess energy but also stimulate their

senses, alleviate boredom, and reduce stress associated with shelter life, which is essential for

their physical and mental health. Our volunteer dog walkers also provide our dogs with

socialization and companionship. By engaging in positive interactions with volunteers, dogs

develop trust, confidence, and social skills, which increases their chances of finding forever

homes. These programs not only benefit the dogs awaiting adoption but also provide volunteers

with a rewarding and fulfilling experience.

To become an active volunteer at CARE Humane society, prospective volunteers must

fill out the volunteer application on our website, complete the onboarding process, and come in

for a shelter tour. To become an approved dog walker, volunteers must then complete a 30

minute dog walking orientation where they will learn how to properly handle and walk the large

dogs. Lastly, the volunteer will complete three hours of dog walking shadowing with our kennel

staff. Once an approved dog walker, volunteers will be able to come in and walk dogs anytime

during normal volunteer hours. They can take the dog to the play yards, walk them around the

property or the park nearby our shelter, or even give the dogs baths! Dog walkers will also be

able to take dogs off property on doggy dates, which is amazing for our dogs because it helps

them destress away from the shelter environment. The more volunteer dog walkers we have, the

better life is for our wonderful dogs!

Volunteer dog walking is a powerful and transformative experience that greatly benefits

shelter dogs and volunteers alike. Through their dedication, compassion, and commitment,

volunteers make a profound difference in the lives of our dogs. Help make a difference. Become

an approved dog walker today at CARE Humane Society!
